Student teams from nine local high schools soon will have their day in court. The annual Stanislaus County Mock Trial event will take place at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Jan. 23 at the Stanislaus County Courthouse, 800 11th St. Superior Court judges conduct each trial, with the teams scored by attorneys practicing in Stanislaus County. Volunteers are needed to fill 30 adjudicator slots required for trials during the three evenings of competition. Students from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp, Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas, Sonora High and Summerville High in Tuolumne will compete in the regional Academic Decathlon on Feb. 2 at Bret Harte. This year's theme for the 10-event competition is Russia, with the featured novel being "Doctor Zhivago" by Boris Pasternak. Students from La Loma Junior High, Walnut Elementary in Turlock and Modesto-area Girl Scout Troop 2225 will compete in the Stanislaus County Future City Competition at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St. Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education and the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County and Mercer Foods, the Future City Competition is a national contest for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades to design and build models of cities of the future.
