-- A bicyclist suffered a face laceration and road rash when he was hit by a minivan in downtown Modesto on Thursday.

About 4:15 p.m., a man in his 40s was riding a BMX bicycle west through an ally between Downey Avenue and Rue De Yoe, said police Sgt. Derrick Tyler.

As he emerged from the alley and rode across James Street, the cyclist was struck by a Kia minivan heading south.

The driver of the Kia stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. The minivan had visible damage to the hood.

The bicyclist was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
