Man, 64, dies after being struck on Modesto's Scenic Drive

MODESTO -- A 64-year-old man was killed on Modesto's Scenic Drive early Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle, police say.

Officer Scott Nelson of the Modesto Police Department said the man was crossing south on Scenic just west of Coffee Road when he was struck by a westbound 1996 Toyota Camry about 4 a.m.

The driver of the Camry, Cheryl Lynn Decicco, 48, of Modesto, was on her way to work.

Decicco stopped, called for emergency assistance and was cooperative with officers. The pedestrian, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was taken to Doctors Medical Center with injuries to his head and torso.

He later died from his injuries, Nelson said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs is believed to have played a role in the accident, he said.

The department's traffic unit is conducting an investigation. Weather is being considered as a factor, but there has been no determination as to any cause of the accident or if the wet conditions were a factor.

"Any time there is that much rain, we always look at things like distance and visibility," Nelson said.

It doesn't appear Decicco was going faster than the 30 mph speed limit, he said.

Officers are investigating whether the man was in the crosswalk at the intersection or just west of the crosswalk and who had a red light. Nelson said traffic lights were functioning properly.

Westbound traffic on Scenic was diverted from 4 to 8 a.m.

This is the second accident this year in Modesto that left a pedestrian with critical or fatal injuries.

Wednesday, an 83-year-old man was struck on Floyd Avenue. He suffered a broken back, broken pelvis, broken leg and internal injuries. He is expected to survive.
