-- A Turlock police sergeant who underwent lengthy surgery after being hit by a car last month is on the mend.

Sgt. Anthony Silva had responded to a call of a burglary in progress Dec. 11.

He had drawn his gun on two suspects when he stepped into the path of a car in the 100 block of South Berkeley Avenue, authorities said.

Silva suffered a broken leg and other injuries.

Police Chief Rob Jackson sent an email to his department Thursday, saying, "I just wanted to take moment to update you on Tony. He is in very good spirits and is recovering well at home."

Jackson said Silva and his family are grateful for the support from the department and the community.
