-- An 83-year-old man is in critical condition this morning after he was hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk at Floyd Avenue and MacGregor Court on Wednesday, Modesto Police said.

The man has been identified as Joseph Yonan of Modesto. He was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for a broken back, broken pelvis, broken leg, and internal injuries.

A 29-year-old woman was driving a Nissan Pathfinder east on Floyd when she hit the man walking north in a crosswalk at MacGregor at about 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Steve Stanfield.

Yonan's clothing that had been cut from him by paramedics, shoes, watch and a pocket knife were in the street about 20 feet in front of the crosswalk.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was not cited. The initial investigation suggests neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor, police said this morning. Investigators are still examining evidence and gathering witness statements.

Stanfield said she was on her way home from work and had her two young daughters with her.
