Oakdale chamber set to give out honors

OAKDALE -- A Jan. 18 dinner will honor individuals, businesses and a club for their community service.

The Oakdale Chamber of Commerce will present its annual awards, two of which already have been determined. The others will be announced during the event.

Frank Clark will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a Modesto police patrol commander and vice president of special services at E.&J. Gallo Winery. In Oakdale, he has served on the school and irrigation district boards, among his other community work.

The Kiwanis Club of Oakdale will receive the Community Service Award for its efforts on behalf of children.

The nominees for other awards:

Citizen of the Year

• Lupe Aguilera, a retired correctional counselor who works on behalf of seniors and other causes

• Steve Knell, general manager of the Oakdale Irrigation District, who is active in several groups

• Former Mayor Wes Stewart, who started the Community Auxiliary Police Services volunteer program and the Young at Heart program at his church

Business of the Year

• Oakdale Feed & Seed, established by the late Dan Donnelly in 1950 and now run by grandson Jeff Donnelly

• Spray & Son Janitorial & Carpet Cleaning, owned by Gary and Bonnye Spray

• R.J. Murdoch Lawn Care

Junior Achievement

• Shayann Trent, an Oakdale Junior High School student who raises money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and has donated hair for chemotherapy patients

• Anne Homer, a student at the junior high who volunteers at St. Mary's Church and for her school's crab feed

• Cameron Sluggett, a recent Oakdale Charter High School graduate who took part in Christian mission trips to help build shelters, and owns his own landscaping and DJ businesses

• Candy Jauregui, an Oakdale Junior High student who enjoys helping teachers during her lunch break and others at other times

• Garrett Paulus, who has volunteered at St. Mary's Vacation Bible School and the Modesto Gospel Mission, among other activities

• Madison Lane, an Oakdale High School senior who is the student representative on the Oakdale Joint Unified School District board and takes part in Academic Decathlon and other pursuits.

The awards dinner will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Gene Bianchi Community Center, 110 S. Second Ave., Oakdale. The $40 tickets should be reserved by Jan. 11. They are available from the chamber, (209) 847-2244 or www.oakdalechamber.com.

STATE OF THE CITY

Oakdale Mayor Pat Paul will deliver the annual State of the City address at a Jan. 30 luncheon. It will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Gene Bianchi Community Center, 110 S. Second Ave. The $13 tickets must be reserved at the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce; call (209) 847-2244. The chamber and the city are co-sponsoring the event.
