Regarding the letter "Stamps not being canceled" (Dec. 21): This letter was written by someone ignorant of the facts if she thinks the financial problems of the Postal Service can be blamed on a few stamps not being cancelled.
This organization is actually very efficient. In 2006, while the USPS was enjoying record volume and record profits, the Republicans decided to destroy our mail service and sent President George W. Bush a bill to require the Postal Service to contribute $5.5 billion more than necessary to their benefit and retirement funds. In spite of this, the USPS did not default until 2012.
Some people might think UPS and-or FedEx could take over mail service. Can't happen! In fact, UPS and FedEx give the Postal Service nearly 25 percent of their parcels because they would lose money delivering them.
It is a shame that so few people know about the trick pulled by the Republican-controlled Congress. The Democrats have tried to reverse it, but the Republicans have prevented their bill from reaching the floor for a vote.
Incidentally, the Postal Service employs many ex-military and minorities. This indicates what the Republicans really think of the military and minorities.
