Acoustic Rock Society

'Dreamgirls' movie

Before seeing the live touring production of the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" at the Gallo Center for the Arts on Jan. 11-13, check out the 2006 Oscar-winning movie at the State Theatre. The creators denied that the show has anything to do with the rise of Diana Ross and the all-female singing group the Supremes in the 1960s, but many have noticed similarities in the story. The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Eddie Murphy and "American Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress.

'Justified' returns

Stay home on Tuesday night and watch the fourth season premiere of the FX network crime drama "Justified," starring Modesto native and Emmy-nominated actor Timothy Olyphant. This year on the critically acclaimed show, Olyphant's lead character, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, works to solve a 30-year-old cold case that harkens back to his nefarious father and his own boyhood in Kentucky. "Justified" is based on the works of novelist Elmore Leonard, most notably, the author's short story "Fire in the Hole."
