Man killed in rollover accident near Sonora

SONORA -- A 49-year-old Fremont man died Saturday when the car he was driving in Tuolumne County missed a turn and rolled over, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man, whose name was not released, was driving a 1961 Volkswagen east on Highway 120 at 4:05 p.m. when he tried to make a left turn onto Shawmut Road near Sonora at a high rate of speed, the CHP said. He lost control and the vehicle overturned several times.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the car.

Officials said the accident remains under investigation and it’s not yet clear whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
