— A 25-year-old Midpines man died early Sunday after losing control of his car and crashing on Highway 140 near El Portal, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver's name has not been released, pending notification of his family.

The report said the man was driving a car west on the highway, less than a mile west of the Cedar Lodge, when it crossed into the opposite lane, hit an embankment and went off the roadway edge toward the Merced River.
