-- An alert resident in west Modesto scared away a thief breaking into a U.S. postal truck Friday, but not before the suspect got away with three bags of mail, police said Saturday.

The theft occurred about 11:45 a.m. in the 500 block of Laurel Avenue, a couple of blocks north of Maze Boulevard and west of North Martin Luther King Drive.

Modesto police Lt. Jolene Gonzales said the thief smashed the truck's window to get the mail. The mail carrier had left the locked vehicle to make deliveries.

Gonzales said the nearby resident spotted the theft in progress, called police and yelled at the thief. She said the suspect then fled in a white or light gray four-door sedan. Police described the suspect as a Latino man, about 200 pounds, wearing a black sweat shirt, jeans and a black baseball cap. Two other people were seen in the getaway car, but there was no further description.

Police ask anyone with information about this theft to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tipsters also can email the Crime Stoppers website, www.stancrimetips.org, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing "Tip704" plus a message. Callers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward.
