-- The California Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that happened in west Modesto in which a man and a woman fled from the responsible car with a child.

The driver of a Mercury heading south on Vernon Avenue ran the stop sign at Robertson Road and collided with a Chevrolet pickup heading west about 5 p.m., according to the CHP.

The Chevrolet spun into the front yard of a vacant house at the southwest corner of the intersection, running over a white picket fence and hitting the home.
