In 1943, the United States went looking for a place in the Atlantic where U.S. planes could refuel before arriving in Southern Europe. They chose Lajes, Terceira, Azores.
After 70 years, the Air Force is leaving the base. The reason given is that jets carry sufficient fuel to make the trip nonstop. The 800 islanders lost their jobs.
The question now is who gets "our" base? China has been to the island, saying they need a presence in the Atlantic.
