Polar Bear Day

Mid-Valley Water Ski Club presents its 57th annual Polar Bear Day on Tuesday at the Modesto Reservoir. The event, which finds brave souls entering the water in winter temperatures, begins in the morning, and the club will let you wear a wet suit if you decide to join in for the Penguin Pull.

'Sugar Man'

One of the year's quiet films returns to Modesto with a screening at the State Theatre. "Searching for Sugar Man" is about a musician discovered in the late 1960s in a Detroit bar by two celebrated Motown producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome onstage suicide. Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero.

Puppet shows

Puppet Art Theater presents a funny version of "Little Red Riding Hood" for children at the Modesto and Salida libraries on Saturday. The story will tell of Little Red, her dog, Fifi, and a pizza-hungry wolf.

New Year's bicycle ride

Join the Stanislaus County Bicycle Club on its annual ride up Del Puerto Canyon on New Year's Day. Breakfast will be served at the off-road-vehicle campground meeting hall at mile 16 by bike club volunteers.

Hip-hop duo
