Modesto — Santa's helpers made one of their first stops on Christmas Eve at Modesto Mobile Village as Renee Calhoun and her relatives delivered toys and clothes to residents there early Monday morning. With "We are Santa's Elves" playing loudly from speakers in their pickup, Calhoun and 10 elves including the jolly one in red surprised underprivileged kids with gifts and candy canes.
This is the fifth year that Renee Calhoun has made the effort to give to others. Calhoun, 27, knows what it's like to struggle with poverty. Her mother was an addict when she was a child, and she remembers Christmases when there was little or nothing under the tree. Now that times are better for her and her family, she said she wants to teach her younger siblings about giving to others. She and her sisters collect gently used toys and clothes all year, wrap them and deliver them on Christmas Eve. Their first stop Monday was the Redwood Family Center, followed by Modesto Mobile Village. The festive troupe planned a couple more stops to mobile home parks on South Seventh Street in Modesto until the toys were gone.
