-- Janki Mistry is an impressive young woman. The Oakdale High School senior carries a rigorous academic load and is involved in school clubs, volunteer work and athletic and musical pursuits.

Janki is the vice president of Interact Club, the treasurer of Students in Action and the Gay-Straight Alliance, and the president of Link Crew and S Club. She has been a member of the Model UN Debate Team for nearly four years and has been involved with Academic Decathlon for three years. She also volunteers at Oak Valley Hospital, where she earned recognition as junior volunteer of the year and outstanding junior volunteer.

Janki has participated in Oakdale High's marching band as first clarinet for the past two years, and she is first pianist for the school's jazz band. Outside school, she also plays the classical Indian harmonium.

This year, Janki was chosen as the city of Oakdale's Distinguished Young Woman. She won scholarships for her performance in the interview, community service and self-expression categories. At the state-level competition, Distinguished Young Women of California, in July, she was chosen by her peers to win a Spirit Award and another scholarship. She will return to the program next year to help mentor the new contestants.

Janki has received first-place awards in speech contests for Rotary Club and Lions Club, and she placed highly in branch honor recital play and piano adjudication. She has also reached Level 8 in the Certificate of Merit program in piano.

Janki belongs to the school tennis team and tutors students in math. She enjoys assisting the elderly with swim therapy.

After graduating from high school, Janki plans to attend a four-year university and major in medicine. Her long-range plans include earning a medical degree and to continue to make a difference in the lives of others.

ADVICE FOR CHILDREN: In order to achieve any goal, working your hardest is essential. It truly will pay off in the end and help make a difference in the lives of many individuals.

ADVICE FOR ADULTS: Spending time with your kids is the best way to realize what our lives are like and how we function in society. Coming from a teenager, the time spent with parents goes further than it may initially appear.

WHAT I'D TELL THE PRESIDENT: I appreciate all that you do for the country and hope that in the next few years you can lower tuition costs. Attending college and getting a great education is one of my main goals, and students around the world as well as myself believe that being able to afford college and not be burdened by financial worries would be extremely helpful.

WHERE I'LL BE IN 10 YEARS: I hope to be working on my residency in order to have my medical degree so that I can practice medicine and make a difference in people's lives.
