Family of six escapes Turlock house fire

TURLOCK -- Six people, including a 10-year-old girl who jumped from the roof, escaped a house fire in Turlock on Sunday night.

According to the Turlock Fire Department, the blaze broke out about 7:50 p.m. in the 200 block of Vermont Avenue. The family — three adults and three children — managed to get out of the home. The 10-year-old girl crawled out a second-story window onto the roof and jumped into her stepfather's arms.

Firefighters rescued a puppy from the scene.

Fire crews extinguished the fire within 20 minutes. Damage was estimated at $50,000. The cause is under investigation, officials said.

Fire Marshal Mark Gomez said the blaze broke out in a second-story bedroom separate from the one the 10-year-old occupied.

"She was in another bedroom," Gomez said of the 10-year-old. A sister who occupied the bedroom where the fire started was not home.

Two children were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation; they were taken by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center, where they were treated and released.

The 10-year-old was not hurt when she jumped into her stepfather's arms, Gomez said, though the drop was roughly 9 feet.

The American Red Cross responded to provide shelter, clothing and food.
