A man on Friday pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the shootings of a teenage boy and a man last month outside an Oakdale convenience store.

Ryan Neil Mazzariello, 26, is accused of shooting to death Abel Calderon, 20, and Ruben Mora Jr., 15, at Oakdale Market on I Street. Mazzariello appeared briefly with his defense attorney Jem Martin on Friday morning for his arraignment hearing in Stanislaus County Superior Court.

Judge Dawna Reeves scheduled Mazzariello to return to court Jan. 11 for a pretrial hearing. He remained in custody Friday afternoon at the Stanislaus County Jail.

The defendant is a member of the Army National Guard. Sheriff's officials have said that a rifle was found at the crime scene, but they have not released information on what motivated the shooting.

There were about 10 to 15 people in the market's parking lot when the shooting occurred.
