Autopsy inconclusive on body in canal

An autopsy on the body of a 47-year-old man found in a west Modesto canal Tuesday morning did not yield any clues as to what happened to him, authorities said.

The Stanislaus County coroner's office performed an autopsy on Vernon France, described as a transient, Wednesday morning.

No signs of foul play were found, Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said.

Investigators await the results of toxicology tests for more information. A passer-by walking on the canal bank saw the body at 7:40 a.m., authorities said.
