MODESTO -- Donations continue to arrive for The Bees annual Book of Dreams, a fundraising effort for area nonprofits aimed at helping the communitys neediest residents.
Now in its 23rd year, The Bees Book of Dreams has brought in $41,61.30, with nearly two weeks to go. Last year, readers donated a total of $53,000.
The money goes toward more than a dozen nonprofit organizations, including the United Samaritans Foundation. Known for its trucks that deliver daily lunches to underprivileged neighborhoods in Modesto, Hughson, Turlock and Ceres, Waterford, Denair, Hickman and Empire, USF also offers other services. These include a clothes closet and showers and referrals for homeless people. The organization also provides a mailing address for those who dont have one.
On average, USF serves 32,000 lunches a month and helps 573 people through its emergency food box program.
A $10 donation would provide 52 pounds of spaghetti enough for 800 meals for the mobile lunch program. A $25 donation would help five families of six with an emergency food box; $50 would pay for a food box for a family of six for seven months. And $100 would buy 3½ cases of peanut butter, or five cases of jelly.
USF also is in need of volunteers in the kitchen helping to prepare lunches, assisting with the preparation and distribution of our emergency food boxes, in the clothes closet helping clients or sorting donated items, in the warehouse sorting donated food items from canned food drives, and in the office.
