Several bowlers made their way to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno and brought some extra Christmas cash back with them.
Will Garber was the big money winner in the PBA Tri Regional three tournament series. He rolled in the Open Tournament and took the second spot for $1,200. Will tallied a 5,557 total for his 24 games and won six of his twelve matches in the Final Match Play Round. Will also brought home another $450 for his 12th-place finish in the Non-Champion Tournament.
Jim Gordin, proprietor of Yosemite, cashed in on two the events. Gordin placed ninth in the Non-Champions for $425 and 13th in the Senior Open Tournament for $450. He ended as the alternate in match play for both events. Wayne Garber found some cash in his seventh-place finish in the Open and pocketed $725. Ed Silva, out of Manteca, finished sixth in the Senior Open and cashed for $650. Steve Davis, also from Manteca, earned $250 in the Non-Champions for being the high senior out of the money.
The PBA Regional Tour has two major functions. It provides a means for high caliber bowlers, including PBA Tour stars, to sharpen their skills before competing on the PBA Tour and allows competitors with full-time jobs the opportunity to compete at the professional level in weekend events. The next West Region Tour Stop will be at Gold Country Lanes in Sutter Creek for the Jackson Rancheria Classic on Feb. 8-10.
Claudelle Bonaccinie added a little holiday cheer to her life when she won the Modesto 500 Club Christmas Tournament held at McHenry. She led the field by over 50 pins with her 842 no-tap set. Barbara Webb took second place after posting a 786 total. Rounding out the top five were Janet Spooner in third with 768, Julie Frost finishing fourth at 729, and fifth-place Anja DeBoer posting a 715 set. The Modesto 500 Club is open to any women who have scored a 500 series or better in league play. The club hosts local tournaments and travels to invitational events throughout the region. Applications for membership are at the bowl desks.
Two no-tap events are set for this Friday. In the morning, the Ladies Luncheon No-tap at Yosemite starts at 9:30am with lunch to follow. The trio team event is open to all ladies. In the afternoon, the Christmas Celebration No-tap begins at McHenry at 1 p.m. Check-in is at 12:30 after a potluck at noon.
This Sunday the PBA Bowling Show will broadcast on ESPN at 10 a.m. The finals for the Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Cheetah Championships from the World Series of Bowling IV will be aired. The Cheetah is one of the five animal oil pattern tournaments that were featured during the Series that was bowled at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Pro shops at both bowling centers are stocked and ready for your Christmas giving. For those bowlers on your list, a variety of balls, bags, shoes, and shirts are available. Accessories and novelty items are also on hand and make great stocking stuffers or smaller gifts for bowling acquaintances. Gift cards in any amount can also be purchased at each center.
The December edition of the Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer will compete this Sunday beginning at noon. Bowlers can check-in at 11 a.m. The winner of the sweeper will join the past Tournament of Champion winners plus monthly winners to fill the 24-person field for the championship event. The TOC is set for Dec. 30 at Yosemite. Call Wayne for more information at (209) 524-9161.
