MODESTO — An oversized load of reconstructed wood panels spilled across Highway 99 early Tuesday when the protruding wood hit a disabled car left on the shoulder late Monday.
The incident happened as the tractor trailer carrying the panels was heading north between Briggsmore and Kansas avenues about 4:30 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Moser.
The impact caused the tractor trailer to go down an embankment and tip, landing on its side. The wood panels were scattered across all three lanes, Moser said. The driver suffered minor injuries.
The car he hit, which the owner had made arrangements to have towed Tuesday, was badly damaged. One driver crashed into the wood in the road, causing minor damage to the vehicle.
Within 30 minutes, the CHP had the fast lane and center lane open and clear of wood, but it took some time to upright the big rig and remove it from the highway, Moser said.
