MODESTO -- Ten football teams are playing for state championships this weekend in Southern California and the Stanislaus District has two of them in Division 2 Oakdale and Division 4 Central Catholic.
They'll try to take that final step at the Home Depot Center in Carson, with Central Catholic (13-2) kicking off the extravaganza Friday at 4 p.m. against Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach (11-3) it's the first of five title games.
Oakdale (14-1) takes the synthetic turf field Saturday at 4 p.m. against Serra of Gardena (13-2), which scored 20 points in the second half to beat Edison of Huntington Beach 27-10 in Saturday's final. Serra was 4-2 after losing back-to-back games to Narbonne of Harbor City (a SoCal D1 finalist) and Chaminade of West Hills. It later avenged the Chaminade loss.
Central Catholic is on a roll that only Open Division favorite De La Salle (14-0) can match, as the Raiders won their section final 52-10 over Escalon and Friday's NorCal D3 Bowl 42-12 over McClymonds of Oakland.
The tailback tandem of Ray Lomas (1,901 yards, 32 total TDs) and Rey Vega (1,322 yards, 29 TDs) have rushed for at least 100 yards apiece in seven of nine games they've played together.
Two Stanislaus District schools have won state football during this seven-year bowl series, Modesto Christian in the Small School Bowl in 2009 and Escalon in Division 3 in 2010. Central Catholic lost 35-21 to St. Bonaventure of Ventura in the D3 bowl in 2007.
