-- Modesto's Travelers Motel has been sold for $1.4 million. A $1,134,000 loan from taxpayers through the U.S. Small Business Administration was used for the purchase.

The MRVK Hospitality Group from Sacramento County bought the motel Nov. 21. That corporation is run by Kiran and Rajen Khatri. Pushpaben and Damodar Harilal were the former owners.

Travelers is at 710 N. Ninth St. The 21,473-square-foot motel was built in 1950 on nearly three acres.

The motel got some bad publicity earlier this year when an on-duty Modesto police officer allegedly sexually assaulted a prostitute there in January. The former officer, Lee Freddie Gaines, 27, is awaiting trial on the charges.

The assault victim testified during a criminal grand jury hearing that she had been working as a prostitute out of a room at the motel.
