Man assaulted at West Modesto market

MODESTO -- Police on Saturday night were investigating an assault with a deadly weapon at a west Modesto market where a man appeared to have been shot in the head. The victim's condition was unknown.

Modesto police reported the victim initially was uncooperative, telling officers he fell off his bike.

The shooting occurred about 7:45 p.m. at Alex and Sons Market in the 500 block of North Martin Luther King Drive, between Vine and Spruce streets.

Officers reported five male suspects and two females left the crime scene before police arrived.

A second man was at the scene when the shooting occurred and suffered what appeared to be a heart attack. Both men were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
