-- Detectives on Saturday were trying to determine whether a wife shot her husband to death in self-defense during a dispute in front of their children at their west Modesto home Friday evening.

Police did not release the name of the wife, who had not been arrested as of Saturday evening. She was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and questioned by police late Friday.

Modesto police spokesman Lt. Rick Armendariz said the department will release the name of the 64-year-old husband after Stanislaus County coroner’s officials conduct an autopsy, which is scheduled to take place Monday.

The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. at the home in the 400 block of Boone Way, a few blocks southeast of Kansas Avenue and North Carpenter Road.

Armendariz said the woman called 911 to report that she had shot her husband during a confrontation inside the home. Officers arrived and found the man with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died.

The woman told investigators she shot her husband after he had assaulted her. Armendariz said five children, ranging from 4 to 11 years old, were in the home during the shooting.

Detectives have collected evidence from the crime scene. They are examining the evidence and reviewing witness statements to learn what led to the shooting and determine if the shooting was, in fact, in self-defense.

Armendariz said the children taken from the home remained in the care of child protective services Saturday.

Police ask anyone with information about this shooting to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636.
