RIVERBANK -- A judge on Friday gave a defense attorney more time to try to negotiate a plea deal for Riverbank City Councilman Jesse James White, who is accused of drunken driving, crashing his Corvette and leaving his injured son in the car in Oakdale last winter.
Public defender Marcus Mumford told the judge he is awaiting documents that might help him work out a plea deal with the prosecution.
Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Dawna Reeves granted the defense attorney's request and scheduled White to return to court Jan. 22 for another pretrial hearing. His trial has not been scheduled.
White did not seek a second term on the council. His term ends Dec. 10, when the newly elected council members are sworn-in. He remains free on bail as he awaits his trial.
White faces three felony charges: driving under the influence causing injury, DUI with a blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent causing injury, and child endangerment. His blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit.
White also has been charged with three misdemeanor counts: hit-and-run causing injury, hit-and-run causing property damage and resisting an officer.
In a preliminary hearing in August, witnesses testified they saw White's Corvette crash on F Street in Oakdale on Feb. 20.
His 4-year-old son was in the Corvette and suffered a bloody nose. White left his son in the car when he tried to leave, police have said.
