A portion of Patterson Road south of Oakdale was briefly closed to traffic Tuesday afternoon while deputies negotiated with a distraught man who refused to come out of his home.

Deputies went to the home in the 8400 block of Patterson Road at about 1 p.m. for a security check after someone in the home called 911 but said nothing to a dispatcher, according to Stanislaus County Sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Bejaran.

When deputies arrived they found a woman outside the home who said her husband was despondent because they had been in an argument.

She told deputies her husband had fired a round from a gun outside their house and had made threats to harm himself. When deputies tried to talk to the man, he refused to leave his home, Bejaran said.

For precautionary reasons deputies closed Patterson Road between Albers and Crane roads. Using a PA system and a telephone, deputies talked to the distraught man and encourage him to come outside after about ten minutes.

He was taken to Doctors Behavioral Health Center for a 72-hour psychiatric hold without further incident.
