Some people seem to think that Proposition 30 is a sham and that its value is inconsequential given proposed cuts at Delta College. As an instructor at Modesto Junior College, I can say nothing could be further from the truth. This campus and our students have suffered a great deal over the past three years as programs, student services, courses, faculty, administrators and staff have been cut.
For the coming spring, we were prepared to again eliminate courses and to take pay cuts. Additional cuts would have been made to our summer program, now a shadow of its former self, and even deeper cuts the following academic year.
Proposition 30 allows us to hold onto the course offerings we have. In the English department, nearly every course is not only full but has 25 to 55 students on wait lists. Reduced offerings are hurting students the most. It's taking them longer and costing them more to get their college degree.
