MODESTO -- A 31-year-old man is in jail after he surrendered to police an hour after a shooting Monday in north Modesto. Daniel Waid of Modesto was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
About 1:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting victim at a home near Agnes Baptist Elementary School, northwest of Standiford Avenue and Carver Road.
An ambulance took the 17-year-old victim, who had a gunshot wound to the torso, to a hospital, where he was reported in stable condition, said Sgt. Brian Findlen. The name of the street where police found the victim was not released.
Meanwhile, officers learned that the shooting had followed a confrontation between the victim and Waid that originated a few blocks away at a home in the 3600 block of Seminole Lane, Findlen said. Police later said the argument was over "an issue of respect." During the argument, Waid went into the home, got a gun and shot the victim, police said Monday night.
Officers surrounded the house and used a public address system to summon residents inside. No one came out, but about 30 minutes after police arrived, a woman drove up and told Findlen she lived there. She acknowledged that there had been a shooting there and said her son, Waid, was driving around in a white Toyota Scion.
"She provided us contact information," Findlen said. "She gave me the phone and allowed me to talk to him, and he agreed to do everything we said. He showed up about five minutes later."
Waid agreed to meet officers on Mohawk Lane, around the corner from his mother's home. With officers' weapons drawn, he got out of the car with his hands in the air and complied with police, Findlen said.
"Thankfully, Agnes Baptist wasn't in session," Findlen said.
