Canned food gets healthier

November 18, 2012

John Holland's column "Canned food has its advantages" (Nov. 10) caught my eye, and I was surprised that the writer actually praised the quality of canned food in comparison to all the fresh produce available in our area.

Just two comments to add regarding canned food in this age of increased attention to healthy eating:

1) Many canned fruits now are packed in light syrup, meaning not as sweet.

2) Some canned vegetables and some soups advertise less salt or lower sodium.

When looking for the better-for-you canned items, we now have more healthy choices available. All we have to do is read the front and back labels.
