It's championship Saturday for the Modesto Junior College men's and women's basketball teams.

In their first tournament of the season, the men have made it to the Mendocino tournament championship after beating Los Medanos 88-55. The women are in their second consecutive final after beating tournament host Las Positas 52-33.

For the Pirate men, Tashawn Mabry scored 27 points, including four 3-pointers. Modesto jumped out to a 12-0 lead and applied its strong defense for the win.

"To hold a JC team to 55 points, that's tough to do," coach Paul Brogan said. "So many team have so many offensive weapons. We limit every team to one shot."

Brendan Evans was particularly effective on the boards, converting a countless number of rebounds to finish with 19 points.

• MJC WOMEN — Camille Roberts led the Pirates with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Modesto (4-1), the runner-up at last week's Cosumnes River Tournament, looks to win today's Las Positas Tournament against Delta at 3 p.m.

• THE MASTER'S 75, UC MERCED 60, at Santa Clarita — Aki Chambers scored 32 points to lead all scorers, but a balanced Broncos team left the Bobcats still searching for their first victory of the season.

Volleyball

• CSUDH 3, CSUS 1, at Carson — Cal State Stanislaus (9-20, 6-15 CCAA) fought to win the opener, but ultimately fell 26-28, 25-22, 25-15, 22-14 to Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-16, 10-11 CCAA) in a California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Soccer

• MJC IN NORCALS — The road to the Northern California men's soccer title comes through Modesto today as the Pirate men host Gavilan at 2 p.m. The No. 7-seeded Pirates, the Big 8 Conference champions in 2011, placed second this fall behind Santa Rosa. In the women's NorCals, 16th-seeded Modesto (5-8-8) is a major underdog at top-seeded Fresno (15-4-2)LOCAL DIGEST
