-- Police are reporting a home invasion robbery and hostage situation in Atwater this morning.

According to Lt. Samuel Joseph, a resident in the 2000 block of Oak Grove Way called police at 2:24 a.m., saying the several men had forced their way into the home and were demanding money from her parents.

Patrol officers arrived within two minutes and saw men running from the home. They caught two suspects immediately, Joseph said.

Police determined that suspects remained inside the home with four hostages. Officers negotiated with the suspects, and two men left the residence. Police took them into custody.

The four victims, who were not hurt in the incident, told police that a total of five suspects had broken into their home and one armed man still could be inside the home. The Merced County Sheriff’s SWAT team responded and searched the house, but didn’t find anyone.

Deputies in the sheriff’s helicopter searched the area, finding a gun and property related to the robbery, Joseph said.

The search for the fifth suspect continues. .
