-- As the holidays approach, so to to the opportunities to help the needy at this time of year.

From a toy for a toddler to a meal for a senior citizen, there are many opportunities to do good.

Today, the Modesto Soroptimists will put up their Christmas Tree at Vintage Faire Mall. The tree will hold ornaments representing needy children in the area who might otherwise not get a gift this holiday season.

Toy drives are also under way at The Salvation Army chapters in Modesto and Turlock, and after this week's Kettle Kickoffs the red kettles will start popping up outside area businesses.

And on Sunday, The Bee will publish its annual Book of Dreams, featuring stories of people helped by area nonprofit ogranizations. In many cases, these groups are changing - and saving - lives.

Check back later today for an update on the Soroptimists' effort.
