San Joaquin County residents with repeated drunken-driving convictions soon will be more likely to have a probation officer check on them on nights and weekends.

The San Joaquin County Probation Department announced this week that it received a $130,000 grant from by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The money will pay to ensure that drunken-driving offenders comply with court orders.

The Probation Department said enforcement would include unannounced searches, random alcohol and drug testing, and monitoring to ensure compliance with education and treatment programs.

The money also makes it possible to conduct checks on offenders on nights and weekends, when many drunken-driving accidents and injuries occur. The goal is to reduce injuries and fatalities.
