OAKDALE -- The man charged with murdering a teenager and a 20-year-old man in Oakdale will be arraigned today in Stanislaus Superior Court.
Ryan Neil Mazzariello, 25, is accused of shooting Abel Calderon, 20, and Ruben Mora Jr., 15, at Oakdale Market at 311 E. I St. on Sunday night.
Stanislaus County sheriff's detectives, who are working with Oakdale police, have not released information on what motivated the shooting.
The only new information released by police Tuesday was that the weapon used in the shooting was a rifle and that Mazzariello was a member of the Army National Guard.
His mother on Tuesday spoke with a Channel 10 reporter. The interview was shot at an angle that kept her face concealed, and she did not provide her name.
The woman said Mazzariello had had trouble with "gang bangers" for a year but she did not elaborate.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran would not say whether either victim had ties to gangs or if anyone at the scene of the shooting was affiliated with gangs. Calderon and Mora were not alone in the parking lot the night they were shot, according to witnesses.
Mazzariello's mother told the reporter she believes her son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his time serving overseas. "He would wake up screaming, he had ... delusions, he would space out, he would feel inadequate," she said.
She said she doesn't know if her son sought help for his mental health issues.
