Curtis Grant, a retired history professor with a long record of community service, will be honored as the American Legion Post 74's 2012 Citizen of the Year during a Veterans Day reception tonight at the Legion Hall, 1001 S. Santa Cruz Ave., in Modesto.
Grant graduated from Downey High School and Modesto Junior College and went on to attain his bachelor's degree and Ph.D. at Stanford University. He also holds a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
He taught for four years at San Jose City College before moving to California State University, Stanislaus, where he spent 32 years and served as the school's vice president of academic affairs from 1972 to 1980.
He is a member and past president of the Modesto Rotary Club while also serving with various community organizations including Memorial Hospitals Association, Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, Stanislaus Partners in Education, Youth for Christ-Central Valley, CrossPoint Community Church and Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County. He has been honored with numerous awards for his commitment to leadership and community service.
Grant and his wife, Nancy, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have two sons, Eric and Ryan, and eight grandchildren.
The reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7. Past award winners include Kenni Freidman, Ron Emerizian, Odessa Johnson and Carl Boyett.

Modesto's Memorial Medical Center has received a Consumer Choice Award for the 11th straight year, and also was named Stanislaus County's most preferred hospital by the National Research Corp.
Memorial is part of the Sutter Health network. The awards are given to hospitals nationwide whose consumers rate as having the best quality and image.
