MODESTO — Modesto police detained a man minutes after he was released from jail Friday night after he jumped into the back of a deputys car.
The man, whose name was not available Friday night, was set to be released from the downtown mens jail on H Street but jail staff recommended that he first undergo a mental health evaluation, according to Stanislaus County Sheriffs Deputy Royjindar Singh.
The man agreed and an ambulance came to jail.
As paramedics evaluated the man, he jumped from the back of the ambulance and started running east on H Street toward an approaching deputy.
The man opened the back door of the deputys patrol car and jumped in, Singh said.
The deputy stopped his car and ordered the man out. The man complied but then jumped into a citizens car, Singh said.
Modesto police officers converged on the area and apprehended the man, after which, his mental health evaluation continued.
