— A rollover accident on Highway 99 on Sunday killed a 16-year-old boy from Modesto, authorities said. The accident occurred about 3:45 p.m. on northbound 99 near the Beckwith Avenue offramp.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Juan Espinoza Sandoval, 55, was driving a 1999 Toyota in the fast lane when someone in a Chevrolet sedan made a lane change directly toward the Toyota. Sandoval swerved left to avoid the sedan.

The Toyota entered the dirt median; Sandoval lost control and it overturned several times as it re-entered the highway, landing on its wheels and blocking the left and center lanes. The unidentified driver of the Chevrolet sedan kept going north.

Firefighters were able to free the driver but had to use hydraulic shears to extricate the passenger, said Modesto Regional Fire Authority Battalion Chief Randy Anderson.

Sandoval and the 16-year-old passenger were taken to Doctors Medical Center, where the teen died. The Stanislaus County coroner's office identified him as Jesus Sandoval.

Investigators are looking for the driver of the Chevy, which was described as a white or silver car with two occupants. The driver is described as a white man with brown hair.

Investigators ask anyone who saw the accident or has information about it to call (209) 545-7440.
