Modesto-area voters hit the polls on Election Day

— Election Day in the Northern San Joaquin Valley got off to a strong start with lines reported at several polling locations — and at least at one site — cheers.

A line of a couple dozen people greeted the opening of a polling site in Oakdale with enthusiasm.

In Ceres, Scott Johnson got to multitask — he voted at Ceres Christian Terrace and got in a visit at the same time.

“It’s nice to come vote where your mom lives,” he said.

Forty people had come in so far to vote by about 8:30. And precinct workers collected provisional and absentee ballots as well, said Isabel Carranza.

Carranza starting working the polls in 2007, when her daughter, Alexandria, did it for a government class. Mother and daughter have worked every election since.
