'Ingenious'
Modesto native and two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner stars in "Ingenious," a rags-to-riches tale about two men who work to sell a crazy new invention a talking beer opener. Dallas Roberts plays Matt, a small-time inventor who keeps coming up with clever but impractical products. Renner plays his friend and business partner, Sam. Renner filmed the independent movie several years ago before he scored Oscar nominations for "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town."

Modesto Symphony
Friends of the late Bette Belle and Jean Smith are providing a gift to the community by subsidizing tickets to this weekend's Modesto Symphony Orchestra concerts. All remaining tickets will cost $15-$20, far under than the usual ticket prices which top out at $89. The Smiths were devoted supporters of the orchestra. Jean Smith died in September at age 92 and Bette Belle Smith died in November 2009 at age 88. The concert features Ludwig Van Beethoven's Symphony No. 4, Gioacchino Rossini's Overture to La Gazza Ladra (the thieving magpie) and Philip Sawyers' Cello Concerto. David Lockington and Ming Luke will both conduct and Lockington will perform the cello solo.

Chartreuse Muse turns 10

'Of Mice and Men'
The prestigious New York-based Acting Company, in collaboration with the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis, presents a touring production of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner John Steinbeck's 1937 novella "Of Mice and Men." The classic play centers on two California migrant ranch workers who dream of owning their own place during the Great Depression.

Home Grown
Longtime Modesto acoustic trio Home Grown performs a benefit for the Modesto Peace/Life Center. The concert will serve as a CD release party for the group's latest album, "Even Better in Person," which was recorded at the West Side Theatre in Newman. The group recently represented Modesto at a trip to its sister city Kurume, Japan. The Modesto Peace/Life Center works for civil rights, sustainability, peace and justice.
