MODESTO -- Stanislaus County Supervisors this morning took a step toward establishing a call center for handling enrollment and eligibility functions for expanding health coverage in California under the Affordable Care Act.
The vote was 4-1, with Supervisor Jim DeMartini opposed.
The county will submit a formal proposal to the state for operating the 25,000-square-foot center, which would assist people who need coverage via telephone, email or online chats.
It would be one of three call centers for the California Health Benefit Exchange, an independent public entity that will provide a marketplace for health insurance under the federal mandate that will require most everyone to have insurance starting in 2014.
The call centers also will handle enrollment for the 1.4 million Californians who will be newly eligible for Medi-Cal under the federal health law.
The exchange will have two primary call centers -- in Sacramento and Southern California. Contra Costa, Sacramento and Stanislaus counties have expressed interest in running the third call center.
