-- A judge Monday confirmed a Nov. 13 preliminary hearing for a defendant charged with murder in the stabbing of a 23-year-old man in Waterford last year.

Juan Carrizales, 28, is accused of stabbing to death James Mandall Oct. 9, 2011, at the Waterford Garden Apartments on Dorsey Street. The defendant appeared briefly Monday morning in Stanislaus County Superior Court.

Judge John Freeland scheduled Carrizales to return to court Nov. 7 for another pretrial hearing. Carrizales remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail on $1 million bail.

Authorities have said the dispute between the two men began with a fight that escalated to the stabbing. Mandall received multiple stab wounds and was taken to Oak Valley Community Hospital in Oakdale, where he died.
