-- Riverbank City Councilman Jesse James White got a new attorney and a new court date during a brief appearance Friday morning in Stanislaus County Superior Court.

Judge Dawn Reeves appointed Deputy Public Defender Marcus Mumford to represent White, who earlier said he no longer can afford a private attorney.

Previously, White had been represented by Mary Lynn Belsher against charges of drunken driving, crashing his Corvette and leaving behind his injured 4-year-old son Feb. 20 in Oakdale.

Belsher unsuccessfully argued to stay on as White's attorney at the taxpayers' expense because she was well-versed in the case.

Reeves gave Mumford more time to familiarize himself with the case. White agreed to extend the court date until Nov. 30, when the attorneys will return to set a trial date.

White faces three felony charges: driving under the influence causing injury, DUI with a blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent causing injury and child endangerment. A blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent is three times the legal limit.

White also has been charged with three misdemeanor counts: hit-and-run causing injury, hit-and-run causing property damage and resisting an officer.

White, elected to the council in 2008, is not running for re-election.
