• DOCUMENTARY FILM PRESENTATION

Info: MJC's Civic Engagement Project presents "If a Tree Falls." The film follows the case of an Earth Liberation Front member accused of crimes of domestic terrorism. As his story unfolds, the film raises questions about the best ways for environmental activist groups to be heard. There will be two guest speakers after the film: Dennis Jackman, board member of the Central Valley Farmland Trust and of the Farmland Working Group, and Brad Barker, conservation chairman of the Yokuts Group of the Sierra Club. • HALLOWEEN AT THE MARKET

Where: Modesto Certified Farmers Market, 16th Street, between H and J streets

Info: The Modesto Certified Farmers Market will hold its sixth annual Halloween costume contest, parade and trick or treat. Registration for the costume contest is from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Kids can decorate cupcakes to look like pumpkins until the parade begins at 10 a.m. Judging is done during the parade, and prizes are awarded after. Top costumes in the age groups infant-3, 4-7 and 8-10 are awarded first-, second- and third-place prizes. There's a $100 grand prize to the best family or parent-child costume. Vendors provide candy for trick or treating and dress for their own competition.

Info: Friends of the Modesto Library is holding a fund-raiser during National Friends of Libraries Week.
