-- JUAN VAA-AYALA, Downey running back

What he did: He was the unexpected star in Downey's 45-14 rout of Enochs, putting together a career game with 30 carries for 182 yards. It was a workhorse performance for a back in an offense that emphasizes the pass. That pushes Vaa-Ayala's totals to 723 yards rushing, and he's also caught 32 balls for 370 yards.

What it means: Vaa-Ayala's give the Knights confidence they can run the ball in the playoffs. "He's healthy, that is the biggest difference," coach Jeremy Plaa said. "He was having the same type of silent but deadly season last year before getting the high ankle sprain in Week 7."

What's next: Downey (7-1, 4-0) hosts Davis (2-6, 2-2) in their annual Block D rivalry game. — RICHARD T. ESTRADA
