I called the José Hernández for Congress Campaign (albeit late in the campaign) to ask to volunteer. The young person who answered referred me to another young person in Turlock. This young person explained that the Turlock campaign meets in the Stanislaus State University cafeteria to phone bank and canvass.

I explained that I don't have the physique for canvassing, but that I might join in the phone banking; and, could I do something from my home. That was the end of the conversation. Don't call us. We'll call you.

I have a bit of campaign experience. Had it been me speaking to a potential volunteer, I might have engaged them a bit more, especially since the volunteer is Latino and bilingual and is offering his home for the campaign. I did not even merit a sales pitch for a donation.

The Hernández gang might have used an ol' fart like me to engage the community members that the young lion campaigners are above bothering with. No matter. Next time a Chicano runs for office, I'll hop on earlier as a political boss instead of as a mere voter. I voted for Hernández, but I am not volunteering.
