MODESTO — Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting earlier this month that left a 15-year-old Modesto boy dead and a man wounded.
Santos Joseph Garcia Jr., 25, and Brian Storment, 18, both of Modesto, were booked into the Stanislaus County Jail sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
Their arrests stem from an Oct. 14 shooting at a home in the 2100 block of Conant Avenue in north Modesto. A 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man were in front of the home when they were approached by Garcia, Storment and another man, 28-year-old Jeremy Anthony Romero, according to Lt. Rick Armendariz.
Romero is at large and wanted by Modesto police on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
At least one person from the group fired several rounds, and all three suspects ran from the scene, Armendariz said. He didn't know if any words were exchanged between the suspects and the two victims prior to the shooting.
Detectives have not determined what motivated the shooting, but suspect it was gang-related. All three suspects are documented gang members, but neither victim is, Armendariz said.
After the shooting, the 15-year-old was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The 23-year-old, who was not at the scene when police arrived, was driven to a hospital. He suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was released from the hospital the next day, Armendariz said.
Detectives continue to withhold the name the 15-year-old victim because Armendariz said they fear for the safety of his family since Romero has not been captured.
Romero is has many easily identifiable tattoos on his upper body. He has "Modesto" and "209" tattooed on the right side of his face, "NSM" for North Side Modesto on his throat, "Cal" under his left eye, a large red star on the left side of his neck and "NS" for North Side on the back of his head.
Romero is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward. Tipsters can text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a message to 274637. Type "TIP704" along with the message.
