Denham hypocritical on women's health care

Congressman Jeff Denham sent his constituents a letter reminding us that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, urging us to support "this important cause" by attending the "Making Strides" event at the Gallo Center and by purchasing U.S. Postal Service stamps that raise funds for breast cancer research.

I am running out of fingers counting the number of women I know who have battled breast cancer. One died last month, leaving behind a young son and a grieving husband.

So I am stunned by Denham's hypocrisy because he has voted with the Republican bloc several times to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which provides for free mammograms. Further, Denham voted to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides mammograms and other health care screenings and services to females who are outside of the usual health care delivery systems.

Denham's claim that he "will continue to support preventative women's health screenings to increase early detection of breast cancer" rings hollow. His opponent, Jose Hernandez, successfully developed full-field digital mammography imaging technology at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. I know who'll get my vote.
