PATTERSON -- Chris Corpuz staggered Patterson with a long touchdown on the game's opening play.
For the final 47-plus minutes, the combustible Patterson Tigers did the rest, unraveling a little more at every turn.
Patterson head coach Nick Marchy was ejected in the first quarter and his offense stumbled in his absence, committing seven turnovers as Los Banos rolled to a 48-12 victory on Friday evening at Patterson Community Stadium.
Los Banos intercepted sophomore quarterback Damian Paulo three times, recovered three, recorded 10 sacks and a safety, and gave up just one offensive touchdown.
The loss is Patterson's first in Western Athletic Conference play and drops them into a tie with Los Banos (6-1 overall) for second at 2-1. Idle Central Catholic (3-0) is alone in first and will play Patterson (5-2) in the final week of the regular season.
If Friday was any indication, Patterson is a long ways off from challenging Central Catholic. Its struggles were typified by Paulo, who appeared overwhelmed by the pressure of the moment.
And Los Banos' defense.
Thrust into action at the varsity level because of a shoulder injury to Joey Lopes, Paulo struggled from the outset.
He finished 9-of-15 for 128 yards with one touchdown — a 38-yard jump ball snared by Jordan Levu — but accounted for six turnovers: three interceptions, two fumbles and a safety.
Patterson's first five plays of the second quarter, just moments after Marchy was tossed with a flurry of yellow hankies, looked like this: run play, short gain; Los Banos safety by Nathan Vanderpoel; run play, loss of 2; interception; fumble.
Corpuz only needed to be opportunistic on Friday evening, but he was so much more. The senior quarterback was 17-of-23 passing for 288 yards and five total touchdowns.
He started the rout with his arm, connecting with Keith Turner on an 87-yard score on the game's first offensive play. Patterson bit hard on the play-action to running back James Sams, giving Turner a step on the secondary.
Corpuz hit the tiny slot receiver in stride. Patterson's Brandon Williams gave a desperate dive near the 45-yard line, but pulled back nothing but air.
Lying on his belly, he watched Turner bolt into the end zone. Turner led all receivers with six catches for 168 yards.
Corpuz also had first-half strikes to Alec Barcellos and Delvonte Moore, overcoming the loss of running back James Sams.
Sams left the game for a few plays after his first carry. He hobbled off the field under the arm of his fullback Bailey Rodriguez, hanging his left leg behind him.
Sams finished the first half, but was anything but Sams-like. He had 10 carries for just 7 yards, and did not play a down in the second half.
Moore (10 carries, 61 yards) picked up the slack, accounting for three touchdowns. He had scoring grabs of 3 and 15 yards, and a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
Markus Rico added a 35-yard touchdown reception for Los Banos and Corpuz capped the rout with a 15-yard run with 47 seconds left. Despite all its mistakes, Patterson clawed to within 10, 22-12, in the third quarter when Dominic Dawkins blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone.
Los Banos closed the game with 26 unanswered points. Marchy likely will miss next week's game at Pacheco because of Friday's ejection.
